LASIK--Is It Right For You?
   by Aaron Warner, O.D.

LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is an increasingly popular option for vision correction for almost anyone who is nearsighted, farsighted, or who has astigmatism.  LASIK’s popularity is mostly due to it being the most convenient option for vision correction by allowing people to be less dependent on glasses or contacts and, in many cases, to be free of them altogether.

Most people over the age of 18 with healthy eyes are good candidates for laser vision correction.  It is important that the candidates eyeglass prescription be stable for at least a year before undergoing treatment.  The health of the eyes and the stability of the eyeglass prescription can be evaluated during a thorough eye examination by an eye doctor. The doctor can then discuss the benefits and risks of  treating your eyes in particular and answer any questions you may have.

LASIK is a tremendous procedure but it is not, however, a cure all for everybody needing vision correction. It does not correct presbyopia, a condition everyone over the age of 40 gets which causes difficulty focusing on up close images. For these people, LASIK can correct their distance vision, but they will still need reading glasses for near vision. Some patients over the age of 40 elect to get monovision, in which the patients dominant eye is lasered with a distance prescription and the non-dominant eye is lasered for up close vision. LASIK is a very safe procedure, but there is a less than 1% chance of a vision reducing complication.  It is important that the patient talk with their doctor to gain understanding of any particular risk factors they may have.  For patients desiring convenience and less dependance on glasses or contacts, LASIK could be the answer.©
